>Getting Faster... Getting Better?
It's happening this month...
Comcast is offering 2 gigabits-per-second service. The roll-out began in Atlanta and will be offered to select areas in California, including the San Fran Bay Area.
Comcast is trying to beat the competition from Google and AT&T - who offer 1 gigabit-per-second service.
...most Comcast customers now must settle for 50 or 105 megabits per second service.
Consumers may not detect a difference between 1 or 2 gigabits-per-second.
With 2 gps internet speed you can...
... download an entire high definition movie in 12 seconds...
...download 100 songs in 2.4 seconds.
The company won't disclose costs for the service until at least June...

Win the Battle... Lose the War...

You probably caught the advertising already...
Verizon is now offering their FIOS Custom TV which allows customers to choose the stations they want - and helps the company compete with Netflix and Hulu...

Customers still need to subscribe to a basic package.
The average cable package offers 189 channels, but viewers only watch an average of 17 channels.

The new service allows you to select "a la carte"...
... It may wind up costing more since there will be fewer channels, so "per channel" price will most likely cost more per unit.
The move may also do away with some of the lesser watched niche channels....
It may work out in the end for the consumer...
...but it may be that consumers win the cable battle for more choice...
...but lose the price war...

There is plenty of competition to come... that's for sure!

Putting Drones to Good Use...
A dangerous fungus threatens Florida's avocado crop...
it spreads rapidly....
...can't be easily detected by man...
but aerial drones can narrow the growth area taken visual pics and data...
specially trained dogs can smell it...
This teamwork between man, animal and machine is quite unique...
...and the only hope right now to eradicate a potential disaster to the avocado industry.

Now that's Technology and Teamwork!

... it's ready to roll now...
...but not a true 'hands free' self-driving vehicle...
Sensitive computers will read white lines... it will not pass vehicles... if it detects a problem, a human driver must take command or it will slow to a stop.
This is a start, however. Real self-driving semis could soon be travelling freely down the highways in about another ten years.

The Changing Retail Environment....

At an Orchard Supply Hardware store, a subsidiary of Lowe's building supplies, in Mountain View, California; customers can now use a 3-D printer to create customized parts for projects such as door knobs, specialty drawer knobs, address plaques and wall plates.
Also known as additive manufacturing, the process involves taking a digital image, slice it into many thousands of layers, and transfer it to a 3-D printer to produce the desired object.
...the process can take two hours or two days depending on the difficulty of the item.
It's a start... soon many stores will be incorporating the power of robotics with 3-D printing to make a variety of hard to find parts.

Some retailers, such as Target and Toys-R-Us have also experimented with 3-D printing, allowing customers to produce holiday ornaments or other novelties.
Just one more way tech is changing the retail environment.

The changing shape of retail ...

On the Verge of a Breakthrough to Detect Alzheimer's:
Researchers at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine in New Jersey are working on a marker system that can track excessive antibodies in various organs of the body. They claim this system can detect Alzheimer's disease in people - even several years before symptoms appear. They claim to have an accuracy rate of greater than 95%. Testing is still in the trial stage before submitting for FDA approval; but it's a good step forward... Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia in aging adults - but it is not a normal part of aging.

A Quality Story with a Happy Ending...

Mrs. T is a 90 year old tortoise who lost her front legs during a rat attack. Mrs. Ryder, Mrs. T's owner, was delighted to find out that her son Dale, a mechanical engineer, could fashion a set of replacement wheels for Mrs. T.
The good news... the wheels are responsive to her movements.
"She is going double the speed she used to - she uses her back legs to push herself along."

(... we last heard Mrs. T was looking for a certain rabbit to ask for a rematch of the Tortoise and the Hare...)

Tanning Bed Alert...
We all are aware of thatwe can get skin wrinkles or cancer from improper usage - or over-usage of tanning beds. However, skin care professionals would also like to remind everyone that there is also a danger of skin infections - herpes, warts, impetigo, and other nasty infections.

YOu know, it's warm, you perspire, there's moisture - the perfect combination for bacteria and viruses to grow.
People may think that UV rays kill all these germs and viruses, but they don't.
Protect yourself:
... make sure your tanning facility is licensed...
... Make sure they keep it clean...
If you have any doubts - leave!

More than one million people in the U. S. use tanning beds everyday. 35% of adults... 59% college students... 17% teens have used tanning beds at least once.
