OH REALLY?
Lockheed Martin's Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough promises life-changing results...
But Scientists are Skeptical for this Reason...

... Although the company claims several pending patents; no scientific papers have been published about their latest work - we need 'peer review'...

"As of now, Lockheed's results are purely theoretical, so it's hard to know whether they will work in reality."
- Rosi Reed
-Asst Prof of Physics - Wayne State Univ and
Researcher at the Large Hadron Collider.

Although headlines tout the "breakthrough" that could change the world in the next ten years ...
... the company never used such language in their press release.

Quality built in is unseen...
It shows its true colors in Action....

Can These Things Really Fight Ebola - and other disease?:

Yes, two germ-fighting robotic devices have been sent to Liberia, along with their inventor - Dr. Jeffery L Deal.
These devices, TRU-D-Smart UVC use a powerful UV light designed to destroy disease-causing microbes...
They can make a room 99.9% germ-free...
So powerful, everyone must clear the room while in use...
Dr. Deal is in Monrovia to train hospital staff about their use...

Oct 2014:
Sue Red Bull, Get $10 Dollars... Maybe...
A Quality Lesson in Marketing.
By now you heard about the Red Bull energy drink lawsuit, and you probably didn't really believe the company's motto - that it will give you wings...
You probably shouldn't believe you'll be getting $10 dollars either...
So many people have signed up for the class-action suit, the amount has currently been revised to about $4 ...
... this will probably drop even more due to the large volume of litigants...
After all, the company set aside about $13 million dollars...
...but after legal expenses, only about $4.5 million will actually be divided between litigants.

Oct 2014:Why Your Pumpkin Pie May Not Contain any Real Pumpkin...
And Why You Should Be Glad...

Complements of Cocurbita moschata, your pumpkin pie is more flavorful than real pumpkin.
Turns out that real pumpkin has more water, making it less creamy and tasteless.
The Dickenson squash variety was developed by Libby/s to make a tastier pie filling. It worked too...
...Libby's sells nearly 85% of all canned pumpkin pie filling in the United States....

And... it's perfectly legal according to the FDA to label this squash product as "pumpkin."

Life is fragile...

Oct 2014:

A Word for Thought...

Ebola is bad, but here are three infections that should concern you More Than Ebola...

1. Influenza - kills far more people historically than Ebola (and spreads far easier)

2. MRSA - a bacteria that does not respond to traditional antibiotics...
It can cause life-threatening infections, particularly in the young, the elderly, and diabetics.

3. Resistant Gonorrhea - also resistant to traditional antibiotics. It causes painful pelvic inflammation and infertility in women.

Knowledge is Power...
But only when it is set free....

Are the oceans taking the heat?...

Oct 2014:Global Warming - Not!...

Scientists have observed that the greenhouse gasses they thought were increasing during the first part of this century, have subsided. NASA also agrees that the global average surface air temperatures is no longer rising.
Some studies suggested the oceans were masking the problem by absorbing the excess heat, but this does not appear to be the case.

NASA researchers describe their observation in the journal 'Nature Climate Change'...
Using satellite observations and direct temperature measurements of the upper oceans...

"The combination of satellite and direct temperature data gives us a glimpse of how much sea level rise is due to deep warming . The answer is - not much."
- Researcher William L Lovel, NASA JPL

Oct 2014: Smart Shirts...
Ralph Lauren is creating a "smart" athletic shirt for their spring 2015 line....
The shirt is made of conductive threads that can sense breathing and heart rate. It is connected to a credit card size box that contains the battery and Bluetooth technology that transmits the data. It also contains a gyroscope and accelerometer that tracks steps and activity. The card snaps into the shirt.

The creator of this technology - OMsignal - also has a shirt available online (price about $200 dollars.)
Hexoskin also makes a similar shirt

Cars will get more and more tech-savvy:

Audi sales are up 15% this year... BMW up 12%... Mercedes-Benz up 9%... Toyota Lexus - up 16%...
Cadillac sales, not so much, but they're working on it...
after all, Mr. Nysschon also agrees that "Cars today are less about functionality of wheels and transmission and more about the total experience driving it. I don't think the expertise is necessarily tied to a particular geography."

'Bootstrapping' a Solar Civilization in Space...
the Whitehouse is taking offers now...

"We need to realize we live in a solar system with literally billions of times the resources we have here on earth and if we can get beyond the barrier of Earth's deep gravity... then the civilization of our children and grandchildren will build shall be as unimaginable to us as modern civilization once was to our ancestors."

Besides facing finite resources on earth...

"...the mountains have all been climbed, the continents explored, and the romance of sailing away on a tall ship to undiscovered islands is no more. What will fire the imagination of the next generation?"

Food Fight for the Nation's school lunches...

Oct 2014:FOOD FIGHT!...

Michelle Obama wants kids to eat healthier meals, and who could blame her for that?
The problem is her lunch choices haven't been so good lately. They also are tied to the Federal Government lunch subsidy program. Apparently so many kids are disgusted with the abrupt utilitarian changes that they aren't eating it; therefore, the schools lose money.
After all, the school lunch program must be profitable because it is self-supporting.

Tough Choices:
If the kids don't want it, the school loses money. If the school refuses the new lunch changes, they lose government lunch subsidies.
One school board president sums up much of the national sentiment:
"...the restrictions are having an adverse effect on the students... the portions and quality aren't what they used to be."

One solution:
Why not try to imitate the school lunch program at the Sidwell School. Surely Mrs. Obama wouldn't mind if the rest of American school kids share similar menus her own children eat. Why just the other day the Sidwell School served the following:
Blended Broccoli Soup
BLT Chop Salad
Vintner's Salad
Philly Cheese Steaks
Roasted Portobello, Pepper and Cheddar Pane Ciabetta
Roasted Spaghetti Squash
Corn Chips
Plums

Oct 2014:
By Now You Know...'Pink Slime' is backkkkkkkk!

Did the Drought Bring Back 'Pink Slime"?
Remember the social media hysteria over the product known as 'pink slime' - the ammoniated beef scraps product?
BPI, the product's processor, labels it "lean finely textured beef," but it will probably always be remembered otherwise...

At one time this product was a staple in 70% of all ground beef products from schools to fast food - and who knows where else!
(McDonald's and Taco Bell say they have permanently scrapped its use.)

Since the summer of 2012, over 50% of the country has been in moderate or extreme drought that has caused cattle stocks to dwindle. Conditions have not improved...
in some cases, they have worsened...
With supply down, costs up, the industry is looking for a cheap alternative to extend product, cut costs, maintain profitability...
Re-enter... you guessed it!...
BPI, counting on a fading public memory, has reopened a previously shuttered plant and is currently producing 1million pounds a week...
That's 50 million pounds a year (down from the 5.5 million pounds per week in 2012.)
However, a new agreement with Tyson Foods to process their raw beef trimmings provides plenty of opportunity for growth to continue....

More to come......
...Love Quality Thinking!
